NBQX disodium salt is a potent, highly selective and competitive antagonist of α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionate (AMPA) receptors (AMPARs). The AMPAR is one type of ionotropic glutamate receptors, well known to be involved in various neurological disorders such as Alzheimer disease, schizophrenia, and epilepsy, by mediating long-term potentiation, excitotoxicity, or both. Inhibition of AMPARs with NBQX shows neuroprotective and anticonvulsant activity.
