视紫红质肽的化学式为C51H88N14O20，氨基酸序列为H2N-Val-Ser-Lys-Thr-Glu-Thr-Ser-Gln-Val-Ala-Pro-Ala-OH，分子量为1217.33。视紫红质也被称为视觉紫色，是视网膜感光细胞的生物色素，它负责对光线感知的第一步。视紫红质属于G-蛋白偶联受体家族，对光极为敏感(1)。视紫红质基因突变引起各种视网膜病变，如视网膜色素变性。在一般情况下，引起疾病的蛋白质聚集在包涵体，破坏中间纤维网，并损害细胞降解无功能蛋白质的能力，从而导致感光细胞凋亡(2)。视紫红质的其他突变导致X连锁先天性静止性夜盲，这些突变主要集中在视紫红质的生色结合口袋周围，突变引起受体的组成性激活。研究发现与视紫质相关的其他几个病理状态，包括差的高尔基后转运、失调激活、视杆细胞外段的不稳定和结合的干涉。
